Russia warned it will react if the EU imposes new economic sanctions against him over the situation in Ukraine.
"In connection with the new list of sanctions from the European Union, if passed, no doubt there will be a reaction from our side," according to the Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement on Saturday (6/9).
Moscow criticized the European Union to design tougher sanctions despite a ceasefire agreed in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. With the announced new sanctions that will apply from Monday, the EU leadership "send signal direct support to the warring parties in Kiev, which is not happy with the results in Minsk meeting," the statement said.
"Instead of looking for ways to hurry to hurt the economies of their own countries and Russia, the European Union works better support economic revival Donbass region of eastern Ukraine," added the Foreign Ministry.
From Brussels / Newport, Wales, Reuters news agency reported the European Union introduced a number of new economic sanctions for Russia - including restrictions on loans for Moscow-owned Rosneft oil company and as a subsidiary of energy giant Gazprom-- Friday (5/9) .
Despite this, the European Union opened the possibility to revoke the sanctions if Moscow is willing to withdraw its troops from Ukraine and obey the ceasefire agreement.
In addition to limiting the loan, the EU also froze the assets of 24 Russian citizens residing in the member states at the same time prohibiting them from entering European territory.
"The ambassador to address a number of sanctions for individuals and a number of sectors of the Russian economy began Monday. Russians must abide by a cease-fire if it wants the lifting of sanctions," said a senior EU diplomat who follows negotiations told Reuters.
